Abstract
This article presents a comparative reading of two memorable characters of social aspiration: Hyacinth Bucket from the British television series Keeping Up Appearances and Mrs Elton from Jane Austen’s Emma. By placing these figures side by side, the article explores the enduring comic archetype of the socially ambitious and self-important character across different historical and cultural contexts.
Moving between literary analysis and popular culture, the piece examines themes of class, pretension, and social performance, highlighting how both characters seek to assert status through behaviour, language, and ritual. It also considers the differing tones of satire and farce, and the roles of surrounding characters in reinforcing or resisting these ambitions.
Through this comparison, the article reflects on the persistence of these character types and the ways humour continues to illuminate familiar patterns of human behaviour across time.
