Queanbeyan Historical Museum Significance Assessment

2026

Abstract

This article explores the life and legacy of Mary Bowers (née O’Rourke), a Queanbeyan nurse whose decades of community service were recognised with the Medal of the British Empire (MBE) in 1967. It highlights her work as a midwife and district nurse, caring for families across all stages of life and providing essential support during periods of hardship, including the Great Depression.

Drawing on local records and community testimony, the article reveals the extent of her contribution to public health and welfare, from assisting births to supporting the elderly and fundraising for charitable causes. It reflects on how her work shaped everyday life in Queanbeyan and why her impact was so widely recognised.

The article positions Mary Bowers’ story within a broader understanding of women’s labour and community care, showing how such contributions, often overlooked, are central to local histories and collective memory.
