Abstract
This article examines the documentary heritage collection of Miss Porter’s House in Newcastle, a rare and comprehensive record of women’s lives across the twentieth century. Through letters, postcards, notebooks, scrapbooks, and everyday records, it reconstructs the experiences of the Porter women and their careful documentation of domestic life over several decades.
The collection reveals patterns of education, work, leisure, and household management, alongside interests in craft, entertainment, and emerging ideas such as self-improvement and spiritualism. These materials provide detailed insight into how women organised, recorded, and made meaning of their daily lives.
The article highlights the significance of domestic archives in preserving social history, showing how seemingly ordinary documents can offer rich perspectives on family life, memory, and changing cultural practices. It also reflects on the ongoing preservation of the house and its collection, now recognised on the UNESCO Australian Memory of the World Register.
